A memoir of the Stalinist repression in the USSR. Maria Joffe was the widow of Adolf Joffe, an early Soviet diplomat and partisan of Leon Trotsky who committed suicide in 1927 in protest over the campaign against Trotsky. Caught up in the mass repression against the Trotskyist Left Opposition, from 1929 to 1957 Maria Joffe was incarcerated in prisons and labor camps. Her 17-year old son died in captivity. Partially rehabilitated in the Khrushchev era, after her release she emigrated to Israel. This is her graphic story.
