Contrary to popular belief, the monarchy works as a pernicious myth in British life. Well established but not widely appreciated facts show that Britain is still a grossly inequitable society, with widespread injustice linked to unjustifiable but deeply entrenched caste and class systems. Edgar Wilson exposes the popular myths, and takes the arguments out of the historical and into the political and philosophical. It is here that this mythology lacks all credibility. Fundamental constitutional change is called for, including the abolition of such an anachronistic institution as the monarchy.
